Steamdry

Ahlstrom launches the first pilot-scale superheated drying trials for nonwovens

The SteamDry project has entered a new implementation phase with the launch of its pilot-scale drying trials. Ahlstrom is the first consortium partner testing its materials in the pilot-scale process, providing an important first industrial application case for the SteamDry technology.

The trials are assessing the drying process using Ahlstrom nonwoven materials under representative pilot-scale conditions. This first testing campaign is helping to demonstrate the technology’s potential for nonwoven applications, generate data to support further process optimisation, and contribute to preparations for larger-scale industrial implementation.

Testing industrially relevant materials

The pilot-scale campaign forms part of Task 9.4: Start-up and pilot-scale drying trials, led by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. It aims to identify and address process bottlenecks and inefficiencies, while generating evidence on the costs, resources, safety and environmental performance associated with future full-scale deployment.

The trials are also providing data for the verification of steady-state and dynamic process models, as well as for life-cycle assessment activities. During the final stage of piloting, the consortium is testing a range of raw materials supplied by its members. The resulting SSD-dried materials are subsequently being sent to consortium laboratories for converting trials and further validation.

Consortium collaboration

Task 9.4 brings together VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd, Valmet Technologies Oy, Piller Blowers & Compressors GmbH, Wageningen Research, Universiteit Twente, BFI VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut and AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH, alongside the paper and fibre-based industry partners Ahlstrom, Metsä Spring Oy, Smurfit Westrock, Sappi Lanaken and Sofidel, , whose materials will also be tested in the pilot plant during the next stages of the trial campaign.

By placing Ahlstrom nonwoven materials at the start of the pilot campaign, the project is taking a decisive step towards validating SteamDry as a versatile and sustainable drying solution for industrial sectors beyond conventional paper-based applications.

“The SteamDry pilot device is an impressive achievement, already demonstrating remarkable robustness and strong potential for industrial-scale implementation. These first trials are a key milestone in evaluating how this innovative technology can enhance the energy-efficient production of specialty fiber-based materials while preserving or even optimizing their performance.” Adrien Trousse – Head of Fiber Expertise & Pilot Facilities at Ahlstrom.
