SteamDry consortium meeting in Pont Évêque: advancing SSD pilots, retrofits and scenarios

SteamDry partners will gather in Pont‑Évêque, France, on 1–2 July 2026 for the next consortium meeting hosted by Ahlstrom, combining technical updates, collaborative discussions and site visits. The programme will cover the latest developments on superheated steam drying (SSD) piloting, process optimisation, retrofit options and project management, alongside a workshop titled “Linking flexibility and SSD – Conceptualization of system design and scenarios.

Two days of technical progress

The meeting opens on 1 July with a full technical session including management updates from Work Packages 1 and 2, which are led by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd and ensure overall project management, administration and coordination in line with the Grant Agreement. These management activities underpin the smooth execution of all technical work and the achievement of SteamDry’s objectives.

Technical presentations will then address key process topics. Work Package 6, led by Wageningen Research, focuses on preventing fibres and air from entering the closed superheated steam loop by combining advanced modelling with experimental work to improve dryer design. Work Package 9, coordinated by VTT, covers piloting of the SSD process in modified pilot dryers, providing essential data on performance, safety and scale‑up needs.

A dedicated session on trial plan review and optimisation for paper, tissue and nonwovens will help align upcoming pilot activities across the consortium and make the best use of the pilot facilities. In the afternoon, partners will hear from Work Package 7, led by the University of Twente, which develops methods and models to remove fibres and air from the loop and maintain steam quality, and from Work Package 8, coordinated by VDEh‑Betriebsforschungsinstitut (BFI), which integrates novel digital technologies, including digital twins, data management and cross‑process automation to maximise energy savings.

The day will also touch on Work Package 5, led by the Austrian Institute of Technology, which refines SSD process requirements for efficient superheating, optimising heat recovery and providing tools that help industry assess the potential of SSD. After the technical sessions, participants will visit the Ahlstrom Innovation Center, followed by an evening networking dinner in Pont‑Évêque to encourage informal exchange.

Flexibility, assessment and system design

On 2 July, the programme continues with Work Package 10, led by the University of Santiago de Compostela, which carries out the environmental and techno‑economic assessment of SSD. This work combines life‑cycle assessment (LCA) and techno‑economic analysis (TEA), and also looks at the flexibility of SSD in different electricity markets, providing a comprehensive view of environmental impact, costs and operational performance.

As part of this work package, the workshop Linking flexibility and SSD – Conceptualization of system design and scenarios (Task 4) will outline relevant system concepts and operating scenarios for SSD. The aim is to link flexibility needs with system design choices and provide well‑defined scenarios that can be used in the project’s assessments and future planning.

This workshop is one element within a wider agenda that also includes the development of business cases, up‑scaling strategies and retrofit opportunities. Presentations from Work Package 12, led by Metsä Group, will evaluate business cases for product manufacturers and technology suppliers, assessing deployment potential in the European Union in the short‑ to medium‑term. Work Package 11, coordinated by Valmet, will present the up‑scaling strategy of the developed solution, including market entry options, retrofit concepts and paths towards industrial‑scale implementation of SSD.

Retrofits, communication and site visit

A further session will explore retrofit opportunities for existing drying infrastructure, such as drying hoods, air‑impingement systems and through‑air drying (TAD) equipment, building on insights from the technical work packages and the up‑scaling strategy. This discussion links closely to earlier work in Work Package 3, led by VTT, which defines the transition pathway towards energy‑efficient drying and develops a vision for shifting current dryers to SSD, and Work Package 4, coordinated by the Austrian Institute of Technology, which designs a green drying process that moves away from fossil energy sources through efficient superheated steam concepts.

The meeting will also address communication, dissemination, intellectual property (IP) and exploitation activities under Work Packages 13 and 14, led by FEUGA. These packages ensure that SteamDry builds a strong project identity, shares results effectively with stakeholders, manages IP and prepares exploitation routes so that project outcomes can be transferred and used beyond the consortium.

A visit to Ahlstrom’s La Gère plant will give partners the opportunity to see industrial operations on site and reflect on how SSD might be integrated into real production environments, complementing the piloting and transition pathway work. The consortium will then hold a General Assembly meeting to review progress across all work packages and confirm next steps, before closing the two‑day event.

SteamDry Consortium Meets in Wageningen to Advance Clean Drying Technologies

From July 9 to 11, the SteamDry consortium gathered in Wageningen, Netherlands, for a dynamic three-day meeting focused on accelerating the transition to clean, energy-efficient drying technologies. The agenda was packed with technical presentations, group work, and a hands-on excursion, reflecting the project’s momentum and collaborative spirit.

Day 1: Technical Insights and Collaboration 

The meeting kicked off on July 9 with a warm welcome in Wageningen, followed by a series of presentations from key work packages. VTT opened with an overview of WP1 on the management of concept development and WP3 on creating a transition pathway towards energy-efficient drying. The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) highlighted progress in WP4, focused on replacing fossil-based drying with green alternatives. 

Wageningen Research (WR) presented critical innovations in WP6 to prevent fiber and air contamination in the closed-loop superheated steam system—an essential step for system reliability. After a short break, the consortium participated in a productive group session (WP11) led by Valmet to evaluate upscaling concepts. Later in the day, the University of Twente (UT) and the VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut (BFI) presented cutting-edge work on steam sealing for web-like materials (WP7) and the integration of digital technologies (WP8), respectively. 

The day concluded with a safety briefing for the upcoming site visit to Smurfit Westrock Parenco. 

Day 2: Industrial Integration and Impact Evaluation 

On July 10, the consortium began the day with an excursion to Smurfit Westrock Parenco in Renkum—a highlight of the event. This advanced recycled-paper mill, producing over 385,000 tonnes per annum of packaging paper from 100% recovered fiber, showcases industry-leading sustainability practices. The visit provided valuable real-world context for how SteamDry technologies could be applied at scale. 

In the afternoon, VTT presented progress on WP9 (piloting of the Steam Superheated Drying (SSD) process), followed by the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) assessment of its environmental and techno-economic performance (WP10). Group work led by the Fundación Empresa-Universidad Gallega (FEUGA) explored IP strategy and exploitation plans (WP14), laying the groundwork for securing innovation results. Valmet and Metsä Group presented on the upscaling strategy (WP11) and business case development (WP12), and FEUGA closed with WP13, highlighting communication, dissemination, and exploitation activities. 

Day 3: Business Planning and Research Infrastructure 

The final day, July 11, opened with a general assembly meeting. Metsä led group work on initiating business cases (WP12), followed by VTT’s session on pilot layout evaluation and trial planning (WP9). A break allowed participants to regroup before touring the facilities at Wageningen Food & Biobased Research—a partner institution supporting innovative biobased solutions. The consortium wrapped up the event with a networking lunch, reflecting on a productive and energizing gathering.

The Wageningen meeting reaffirmed the consortium’s shared commitment to reshaping industrial drying processes with sustainable and economically viable solutions. With valuable input from all partners, hands-on industrial insights, and collaborative planning for future pilots and business models, the SteamDry project continues to pave the way for clean tech in the circular economy. 

SteamDry Consortium Meeting Held in Santiago de Compostela

On January 22-23, 2025, the SteamDry Consortium gathered at FEUGA in Santiago de Compostela for a key project meeting. The event focused on evaluating progress, discussing technical challenges, and planning future steps for the project.

The meeting began with a welcome address from FEUGA’s General Manager and an update from the European Commission’s Project Adviser. Over the course of two days, work package leaders presented updates on management, energy-efficient drying strategies, and the transition to greener drying processes. Discussions covered simulation results, challenges in optimizing heat transfer, and the development of digital technologies for process integration. The consortium also explored strategies for preventing fiber and air contamination in the drying system, scaling up the proposed solutions, and assessing their environmental and economic impact. Workshops were conducted to refine pilot testing parameters and intellectual property management, while communication and dissemination strategies were reviewed to enhance the project’s outreach.

A visit to the FINSA facility provided insights into industrial applications, further grounding the research in practical implementation. The meeting concluded with a review of key takeaways, reaffirming the consortium’s commitment to achieving significant energy savings in industrial drying processes and advancing sustainable innovations in the sector.

Day 1: June 26, 2024

Welcome & Opening:

We kicked off with warm greetings from Sabrina Dusek (AIT) and our project coordinator Harri Kiiskinen (VTT).

Project Work Packages (WP) Updates:

  • WP1 and WP2: Harri Kiiskinen (VTT) provided updates on these management work packages.
  • WP3: Janne Keränen (VTT) discussed the transition pathways towards energy-efficient drying.
  • WP4: Sabrina Dusek and Verena Sulzgruber (AIT) shared advancements in green drying processes, focusing on moving away from fossil energy sources.
  • WP5: Sabrina Dusek (AIT) outlined the SSD process requirements for efficient superheating.
  • WP6 & WP7: Floor Boon (WR) and Edwin Zondervan (UT) addressed the prevention and removal of fibers and air from the closed superheated steam loop.
  • WP8: Christoph Nölle (BFI) introduced the integration of novel digital technologies.

Site Visit & Discussions:

We had a fascinating visit to the Rail Tec Arsenal Climatic Wind Tunnel, followed by discussions on piloting the SSD process, environmental and techno-economic assessments, up-scaling strategies, and business cases.

Day 2: June 27, 2024

General Assembly Meeting:

The General Assembly meeting saw active participation from members, with discussions on key topics and project direction.

Workshops & Group Sessions:

A.SPIRE: Vladiana Daniela Petarlecean provided a concise overview of A.SPIRE, the European Association overseeing the Processes4Planet partnership. A.SPIRE encompasses 20% of the European manufacturing sector and includes over 170 stakeholders across 20+ countries in sectors such as cement, chemicals, metals, and paper. Vladiana emphasized A.SPIRE’s mission to advance enabling technologies and best practices for a resource-efficient process industry, aligning closely with the goals of the SteamDry project.

IP Workshop: Teresa Sixto from FEUGA led an engaging workshop focused on intellectual property (IP) management. The workshop provided valuable guidance on navigating the complexities of IP in collaborative projects. Key topics included the patenting process, protection strategies for innovations, and commercialization avenues. Teresa’s session emphasized practical steps to safeguard our technological advancements and leverage them effectively in the market, ensuring our innovations are well-protected and strategically positioned.

Group Work: Participants engaged in a collaborative group work session to refine the SSD (Superheated Steam Drying) concept vision. This interactive session involved brainstorming and discussing various aspects of the SSD process, including technical challenges, potential applications, and strategic directions. The group’s efforts led to actionable insights and recommendations, which will be crucial in guiding the future development and deployment of the SSD technology.

Lab Tour & Closing:

The day concluded with a tour of the AIT research facilities, providing a closer look at ongoing projects and innovations. The closing session offered a summary of the meeting’s key outcomes and outlined the next steps for the SteamDry project.
