Wageningen Food & Biobased Research to Present SteamDry at the Technologiekring Paper & Board Seminar

On 19 November 2025, Wageningen Food & Biobased Research (WR) will participate in the Technologiekring Paper & Board event in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, hosted at the Van der Valk Hotel Apeldoorn – De Cantharel.

This annual seminar brings together professionals, researchers, and industry experts from across the paper and board value chain to exchange knowledge, explore new technologies, and strengthen collaboration toward a more sustainable and innovative future.

Focus on Innovation and Collaboration

Organized by the Natuurvezel Applicatie Centrum, the Technologiekring Paper & Board series highlights key developments in paper and board machines, technologies, and products. The November 2025 edition will focus on innovation, technology, and collaboration as drivers of progress in the sector.

WR’s Contribution: Advancing Energy-Efficient Drying

Joanne Siccama, Researcher in Food Processing Technology at Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, will give a presentation on the SteamDry project.

Drying is among the most energy-intensive processes in industrial production, including in paper and board manufacturing. SteamDry explores advanced steam purification, digital process control, and innovative equipment design to significantly reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.

Joanne Siccama will present the project’s progress, technical challenges, and potential contributions to the paper and board industry’s sustainability goals.

Shaping the Future of Fiber-Based Products

As the paper and board sector advances toward fiber-based, circular solutions, the Technologiekring Paper & Board provides a valuable forum for connecting research, innovation, and industrial practice. Participation in this event supports the broader mission of Wageningen Food & Biobased Research to develop technologies that enable a more resource-efficient, low-carbon manufacturing future.

SteamDry Project Represented at NWGD Symposium 2024

The SteamDry project participated in the NWGD Symposium on October 3, 2024, in Wageningen, Netherlands. This annual gathering, organized by the Netherlands Working Group on Drying (NWGD), is a key event for experts in dewatering and drying technology, focusing on advancements in energy-efficient drying and improved product quality.

Joanne Siccama, from Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, spoke on behalf of the SteamDry project. Her presentation, titled “Superheated Steam Drying in the Paper Industry: Opportunities and Challenges,” delved into the innovative approaches our project brings to drying processes within the paper industry. Joanne discussed the advantages of superheated steam drying, the obstacles faced, and the potential this technology holds for reducing energy consumption and improving sustainability.

The presentation slides are available here.

The symposium featured a diverse range of presentations from industry leaders, researchers, and academics, highlighting the latest innovations in drying technologies. With a focus on networking and collaboration, participants had the opportunity to connect with peers, explore new ideas, and discuss potential projects.

Program Highlights:

  • Time: 09:00 – 21:00
  • Location: Omnia, Wageningen Campus, Wageningen
  • SteamDry Presentation:
16:45 – Superheated Steam Drying in the Paper Industry: Opportunities and Challenges
    Presenter: Joanne Siccama

In addition to presentations, the symposium also hosted a poster & pitch session with prizes awarded to the best student contributions, making it a vibrant forum for knowledge exchange and innovation.

For those interested in learning more about the SteamDry project’s cutting-edge research and its potential to transform the drying industry, don’t miss Joanne’s presentation at 16:45.
